Node offline emails are now actually being sent

FixedEdge NodePortal

The node offline emails announced on 1 October were not going out, because their wording was still marked as awaiting review. They have been sent since 4 October, including to operators whose accounts predate the current sign-up form.

On 1 October we announced an email when your node goes offline. None was sent. The three emails were still marked as awaiting a wording review that had already happened, and anything marked that way is held instead of sent. We found it on 4 October by stopping one of our own nodes and waiting for an email that never came.

The emails have been going out since 4 October. If one of your nodes went offline between 1 and 4 October and you heard nothing, this is why.

What else was fixed

  • Older accounts are no longer skipped. Operators who signed up before the current sign-up form had no address on file for alerts, so they would have been left out even once sending began. Your sign-in email address is now used.
  • A temporary failure doesn’t lose an alert. If we can’t look up your address at that moment, the alert is held and tried again instead of dropped.

Nothing was sent late

Alerts held during those days were not all sent in a batch. Only nodes that were still down, with an outage less than 3 days old, got an email. Alerts for outages that had already ended, or were older than that, were dropped.

What you need to do

Nothing. The rules for when you’ll hear from us, and the switch to turn the emails off, are unchanged and described in the original entry.
