Node locations now come from a database we host, not an outside lookup
Your node's city and metro are now looked up in a database we run ourselves, so its IP address is no longer sent to an outside service. Every node was located again on 2 October, so your place on the map and metro leaderboard may have moved.
To put your node on the map and in a metro, we work out roughly where it is from its IP address. Until now that meant sending the address to an outside lookup service. The lookup now happens in a location database we host ourselves, so your node’s IP address stays with us.
Every node was located again from the new database on 2 October. The two sources don’t always agree, so your node’s city, its pin on the map, or the metro leaderboard it appears on may have changed.
- A metro you set yourself still wins. The lookup never replaces it.
- A node the database can’t place keeps the location it had.
- Locations stay current on their own. The database refreshes automatically, and every node is located again each time it does, so a location can shift slightly after a refresh.
- Portal pages that show locations now carry a credit line for the location data, at the foot of the page.
What you need to do
Nothing. If your node now shows under the wrong metro, set the right one yourself in the portal and it will stick.
