Claim your own domain in the portal and get its certificate automatically
Each deployment target with a custom domain now has a Custom domain block in the portal. Claim the domain, add the TXT and CNAME records it shows, and the certificate is issued once they are found. An unverified claim lapses after 48 hours.
Pointing your own domain at a site has meant asking us. You can now do it yourself in the portal, with DNS records that prove the domain is yours.
Open a deployment target that has a custom domain. Its drawer now has a Custom domain block:
- Claim the domain. Select Claim. The domain is held for your project while you set it up.
- Add the two records it shows. A TXT record proves the domain is yours, and a CNAME sends its visitors to us. Add both wherever you manage the domain’s DNS.
- Select Check now, or wait. The records are also looked for automatically.
- Watch the state. Once the records are found the claim moves from waiting for DNS to verified, then to issuing certificate, then to active. The certificate is issued for you, with no support request.
The block also shows when the claim was last checked, and the reason if it failed. Remove claim gives the domain up.
Limits
- An unverified claim holds a domain for 48 hours. If the records haven’t been found by then, the claim fails and the domain is free again.
- After a claim fails or is removed, the same project waits 48 hours before it can claim that domain again. The block tells you when. Any other project can claim the domain straight away, so nobody can keep a domain they don’t control away from its owner by claiming it over and over.
- A project can have at most 10 claims awaiting verification at one time.
- A domain held by another project shows only “claimed by another project”. You aren’t told which project, and you can’t see its records. If that domain is yours, tell us.
What you need to do
Nothing for a domain that is already serving your site. To set up a new one, open the deployment target and start from its Custom domain block. Custom domains in the docs has the full steps, including root domains and what to do if a claim fails.
